MUNKY CAN’T BELIEVE KORN DRUMMER'S GONE

Korn’s Munky Shaffer has told of the band’s pain and disbelief after drummer David Silvera left the band, sold his instruments and decided never to perform again. But he’s not sure if Silvera’s drug problems are entirely to blame.

Silvera went on “indefinite hiatus” from the band in 2006. He was replaced in the studio by virtuoso Terry Bozzio and Bad Religion’s Brooks Wackerman, with Korn frontman Jonathan Davis also taking a turn on the stool.

They later toured with Slipknot’s Joey Jordison before finding Ray Luzier, who was recently announced as Silvera’s permanent replacement.

Munky tells BigMusicGeek: “Three weeks ago I found out David had sold all his drums and never wants to play again. I was blown away. I’m over him not wanting to play with us – but he doesn’t want to ever play the drums again? I told everyone in the band and they were like, ‘wow’.

“He’s one of the best drummers in the world. I can’t believe he’s not coming back. I’m still in disbelief. It’s painful.”

When asked if he thinks Silvera’s addictions are at the root of the problem, Munky says: “I don’t know with David. I really feel his heart wasn’t into it and that may be why he was doing a lot of drugs. But then again, I’m into it and I did a lot of drugs.”

He explains it’s a similar feeling to have lost guitarist Head Welch, who left in 2005 to pursue his religious callings. Munky says: “We underwent separation anxiety because these people wre were a major part of our lives – and then they weren’t there. The next day they’re just gone. And I’ve never talked to either one of them again. It’s almost as if a death has occurred.

“These are the people we grew up with. We had dreams together and saw those dreams unfold. Then one falls off and another falls off.
